1. Introduction - Reading through the script

Introduction

In this assignment, we have been tasked with designing the lighting and sound effects for the play a bridged version of The Tempest, which our teacher Ms. Willams made edits to. And the play will be performed in the Shakespeare School Festival, where various schools from Europe come and perform plays written by Shakespeare. My main role in this process is to design the lighting for the play along with my fellow classmate Nathan who is also doing the lighting design.

Reading through the script

For the past few lessons this week, we read through the script, to know the play a bit better in order to help us to design the lighting and sound for the play. While we made some mental notes about the places we could add sound effects or lighting states, in order to better represent the true realistic of where the play is set in. The script helped us a lot through the already existing stage directions, providing us a rough idea of what lighting state we might need. And at the moment we are yet to receive the rigging of the venue we will be in, since the venue we used last time is under construction. Therefore we do not really know what lights they have, so just made some descriptions of what the lighting state might look like for each scene.

Making some rough notes

The list below shows some of our ideas of what the stage might look like in each scene:

- Island lights: maybe a light blue overall wash, with some profile lights to keep the faces of the actors lit and not appear to be blue. And then maybe some yellowish gobos on the ground to mimic the texture of the sand.

- Other island lights in another place: Greenish yellowish wash, also some profile lights to keep the actors lit up.

- Storm lights: some flashing lights on the stage, but maybe also some above the stage to mimic the lightning in the clouds. And also for another type of storm light, maybe shine some lights above the audience.

- Sea lights: some dark blue wash, this could be combined with the storm lights for the first scene.

Evaluation
I think that the sessions this week were very productive, but I think we could maybe come up with more ideas that we can add to the play. And I also think that we need to read the play a few more times in order to understand it thoroughly.
