Today we had the technical rehearsal.. During the technical rehearsal, I aim to refine my ideas with the actors on stage, which will give me a better idea of whether I can achieve the aim of the project, which is to create an immersive atmosphere through the use of lighting.
Here are some main adjustments I made during the tech rehearsal:
- In the prologue of the play, we have the purple wash and police lights combined with a DSR spot for the actors. And there has been a bit of adjustment with the curtains on the side of the stage where they would like to close off a bit of the front stage left and right with the curtain, so they can store some props there. Therefore, I needed to adjust the DSR spot closer to DSC in order for the light to shine less on the curtain on the side of the stage.
- In the technical rehearsal, I realised that there was a lot of moving of props during the different scene changes. Therefore, I talked to our director, Ms Williams, and agreed that we would have some running lights on the stage for the actors as they transition the different props off stage and on stage for different scenes.
- On page 55 of the script, I originally had planned to have a spot on centre stage where it has an FX of a changing iris, which makes the spot bigger and smaller as the actor stomps on the stage. But this idea was discarded when I ran through the cue with the actor because it's really hard to time the cue to start the cue, and hard to time each stomp with the actor.
- In Act 2, the kitchen scene at the start, Ms Williams reminded me that the actors are not very well lit on Stage Left, and this is because the actors are a bit too upstage, and my lights can't be directed there unless I sacrifice a bit by shinning a bit of light on to the projection screen. Therefore, I modified to add a bit of profile light to the actors on stage left.
- There is a scene where originally the actors were going to be on the floor space in front of the stage, but now they wanted to perform that scene on stage, so I have to move the spot on stage.
